Little Bird

Little bird, high above
Looking down for someone to love
Light catches on his scales
A rainbow flashes
Under a wave
In the same bright colours as your wing
You’re in love, little bird

So you feed him berries and the salty grasses
From the crooked crags he can’t reach
He shows you movement
Fearless flying
Faithful leaping
And really trying
And a beauty that you just can’t believe
You’re in love little bird
You’re in deep

And you wanted to make him a nest
But you went too heavy with the branches
He wanted to make you a space
But the water wouldn’t move over
Where will you live?
If you can’t breathe
And neither can he

So you follow each each
Move in a mirror
Of sky and sea
And it seems right and easy
But you know that it can never, ever be
Because under the surface
Is cold and grim
You’re in love little bird
But you can’t swim

And you wanted to make him a nest
