Waste ep by Jaspertine

Reach for the Bar (early version) - I kinda like the faster tempo on this version, gives it a little more energy. But just about everything else is a little too sloppy. Not that being sloppy has ever stopped me before, but yeah, I think the do-over was an overall good for this song.

Chekhov’s Gun (early version) - Fun little detail, some of the chord progressions are slightly different than in the album version. I had a tendency to play the part a little differently while practicing, and that version eventually took over, but this is how I intended it to be played when I wrote the song. There are things to like about this version, but on the whole, I think it was much improved by being re-recorded.

Crackle - The song is a play on the conservative cliché of “how am I supposed to explain to my child…”, my response being “your child will explain it to you.” The youth tend to catch on to these things quicker than us olds. It was going to be on the Dotwaves EP, but I cut it, mostly because the EP was getting a bit bloated, but I was also a bit worried that whatever the song ends up saying, the messaging was a little muddled.

It Keeps Getting Worse (early version) - Boy howdy, am I glad re-recorded this song. To be clear, this is how I envisioned the song when I first wrote it, but then I was pulling my hair out trying to get the mix and arrangement to work. Of all the tracks on the album, I really felt like this one needed to be done right, and this just wasn’t it. As with the other two Hello Normal early versions, it’s just a bit too fast, a bit too busy, and waaay too trebly.

She’s Got Nothing - Another Dotwaves outtake. The POV character in this song is a guy who treats romantic partners like status symbols. In the end, he’s alone and unloved, and the best he can do to understand why is to presume that he’s not enough of a status symbol to be attractive to others, which is to say he never really learns his lesson. This song is a glimpse of what I’d have sounded like if I went all-in on synths at that particular period.

Jaspertine is the sonic alias of former singer/songwriter JV "Jave" Depsres, from the Moncton area (Canada).

Sounds assembled in his bedroom, Jaspertine's sound is mushy and spacey, a little psychedelic, a little pretentious, and extremely neurotic.
