El Destajo from El Siete by Sotavento

In the midst of the international African slave trade and across the Americas, enslaved Africans often were not allowed to possess musical instruments; hindering the ability to maintain a historical and cultural identity and self-expression. The cajón, a scrapped wooden crate transmuted into a drum, was created out of this need.
This piece is based on the Afro-Peruvian rhythm of festejo where the cajón and the quijada (donkey jaw instrument) are the main rhythm instruments.
