Dasein seeks to define the state of involuntary Thrownness to the world that all human beings experience at birth.

Is a German term famously used by Heidegger in his seminal work Being and Time (1927).

Dasein refers specifically to the kind of being that human beings have — a being that is aware of and questions its own existence. Dasein is not just a conscious being; it is a being for whom Being is an issue.

Thrownness (Geworfenheit): Dasein is "thrown" into a world it did not choose — into a specific historical, cultural, and personal situation.
