Four compositions of live improvised electronic music (w/ minimal over-dubs) created on 2 hardware synthesizers a Access Virus-A and a Roland SH-01A. No external sequencers, sampling, drum machines or computer assistance aside from recording the events.

Keyboard-synth chords flutter and jump, creating a form of cadenced language in the opening of Ethos. This brief moment of musical indecision attracts the sequencer who makes his jumping ions alternate vividly in a static rhythmic choreography. The union of these rhythmic chords merges into a stationary vortex from which a zigzagging rhythm line escapes. In form, it reminds me of Edgar Froese in Stuntman. In the key, it is quite different! Arpeggios twirl on this jerky rhythm structure, testifying to this rich tonal flowering that surrounds Ethos. And in turn, all from PHASE INTERVALS. The rhythm is now tied by electronic staccatos effects that parade at high speed under a sky shimmering with sonic stars that sparkle in an abstract melodious form. A bass line brings more musicality and warmth from the 4th minute. Pulsating bass, sounding like percussion, hit and throb with force, mixing an essence of Groove with a good teutonic electronic rock. Arpeggios, as tinkling as pieces of glass swirling in a narrow tube, always accompany the rhythmic mutations of Ethos which reaches a more fluid velocity towards its finale. As the first title, we remain quite surprised! Alpha Wave Movement had accustomed us to quieter, more meditative works over the past few years, apart from a side project, Subtle Shift and the album Somber Frequencies. In fact, we must go down the corridor of time until 2017, with the excellent Echoes in the Vacuum, to remember that Gregory T. Kyryluk is as comfortable in structures of rhythms as he is in his phases of transcendental meditations. So, I had a pleasant surprise when I went to discover PHASE INTERVALS! This latest album by AWM revisits the borders of the late 90s, when processors were incorporated into synths, merging analog and digital in possibilities to obtain an immeasurable variety of new tones, new sound timbres. PHASE INTERVALS is the result of improvised sessions in a framework of ambient music and teutonic rhythms. The music is entirely performed on the Access Virus-A and Roland SH-01A synths, without other external sequencers, drum machines, sampling, and with a minimum of overdubs. We are as surprised as seduced with an album rich in sounds, sequence structures with parallel flights and evolving rhythms. And what makes the dimensions of Ethos, also makes those of the other 30 minutes of this new album by AWM.
