Paspel by Jan Vahl
“Paspel“ (from French “passepoil“, to: “passer“ = to go beyond (to pass) and “poil“ = hair (fringe))* is based on the source material of a recording of the sewing of a textile sample with a piped pocket.
Using contact microphones attached to the industrial sewing machine, the rhythm and tonality of the execution of a textile craft standard was captured and subsequently formed the basis for the composition, with the etymological origin of the term providing a conceptual terrain that relates to Adorno's reflections on fringing (“Verfransung“). The work attempts to portray the meditative power of manual processes and also to provide the sonic imprint of this as a space for thinking and dreaming.

Much like a hardware RNG draws on thermal noise, electromagnetic interference, or quantum effects to generate truly random data, HRNG as a sonic practice is rooted in the material and the contingent.
