Held | Pur by andarctica

“held | pur” is the fourth release of the ambient music project, andarctica. Two live improvisations on guitar and pedals, “held | pur” begins with a bright, open-armed invitation before turning inward with the persistent pulse of “pur”. Composed as a meditation, focus or sleep aid, the simplicity and duration of the second piece lays a landscape for creative expression and losing yourself in thought.

About andarctica
andarctica is the ambient music project of Brian Barth. Based in Amsterdam, he crafts flowing, persistent pieces that combine orchestral and electronic sounds with field recordings and manipulated tape textures. Drawing inspiration from artists like Rhucle, Celer and Mnemonic45, andarctica uses slow-moving patterns and melodies in combination with full-frequency layers of sound to encourage moments of quiet focus and induce gradual auditory hallucinations.

“I'd been trying for a while to find an outlet for my ideas that didn't operate on a human level or timeframe. Ambient music was a perfect fit for it: it challenges the listener and rewards the patient. I record most of andarctica live to tape and do minimal editing after the fact. The structure comes out of my thought process during composing, and there's usually a clear arc: persistent sounds that ring consistently true while the surrounding environment increases in complexity over time, slowly swelling until bursting, followed by an epilogue where a new perspective or awareness is realized.” — andarctica
