Peachtree Playthings by Naomi Halisca

HELLO!!!

My name is Peachtree Playthings. Legally, that is. To those who know me I’m Esther. You’re holding me in your hands right now. Well, I assume you are. I could be laid out flat across your table, or on a picnic blanket, or I could be crushed between the teeth of a great beast. Anywhere, anyway that I am, I’m glad to be there. I’m just like that. My mom always said God could put me anywhere and I’d find something to be happy about. She also said she could see in the ultraviolet spectrum, things happened there that I didn’t get know about.

“I saw a new episode of The Dick Cavett Show,” she’d say. “With my other eyes.”

“Yeah?”

“I had no idea gnomes were so well-spoken.”

“Not much else to do but read out there, I imagine.”

“Out where?”

“I don’t know,” I’d say. “I watch Conan. He doesn’t have any gnomes.”

Later, at dinner we would share few words. Sometimes, I swore, I could hear little ultraviolet giggles coming from the TV set in the living room.
