Recording Notes:
The initial recordings for this album don’t appear here at all. That all happened 12 years before this current moment. It’s a long story. So I’ll start at one of the following beginnings. Final final final final V7.1.2b (FINAL3). Something like that. Safety third?
The Gqebs String 4tet was recorded by Elijah Moleseng Madiba at ILAM in Makhanda. A new and very noisy aircon had recently been installed in the neighbouring building so they had to record in the control room. It was ok though. All of Guy’s takes were then captured by Julian R. in The Dargs at Kewl&Lukka between the infamous knitted jersey incident in The Purple Palace. Guy then recorded Julian at said previous place (which as a name is ever shifting - don’t follow the bread crumbs). Chris, who is the vertebral column of this here body of work, worked remotely from Edinburgh. Kaki recorded herself in her dungeon in NYC. Mudassir tracked his sarangi in Delhi. Derek did his own jol at home in CPT. Bafo at Headroom Studios on the Bluff (high 5’s to Marius Botha). Jonno tracked somewhere outside Slaapiesfonteinspruit near a beach apparently. Julian S. in Swissland. Pino in Italialand. Harshit in Mumbai. Louis in Jozi. Daniel in Jozi. Dean azwel. I think/hope that’s it.
This entire project was premixed by Mm-ark on a digital personal computer that was ordered off the internets. It almost didn’t happen. A number of times. This record I mean. Final final final final final. Why gain stage when you can API2500. Fuzzy then said it was so-so, so the album was then properly mixed by Simon & Guy at Sound & Motion Studios in Cape Town. They decided to go large and did it all in Dolby Atmos on ATC SCM50ASL front array monitors and MTM Surround array of 7.1.4 configuration, utilising Nuendo 12. The stereo mix was derived from the Atmos version through a hardware stereo bus consisting of a Neve Portico 5042 Line Amp and SSL K/J series buss compressor with the dual detector THAT 21XX upgrade. Stereo and binaural masters were assembled on the Dolby Album Assembler and monitored on B&W 801 Matrix Series 3 loudspeakers and Sennheiser HD560s headphones. It now all sounds like this. Let us know how you feel about it.
