while walking past the school i noticed an old stone wall up on the mountain
on sunday afternoon i walked to the end of the road to see what be could found there

in early spring the hills were dry
as i climbed up towards the sky
a yellow dust lay on the pines
in getting lost i hoped to find

when lords on horseback kept serfs in line
i walked the wall and saw the towns below
and wondered what a child might know
about

a path led down to just behind a shrine
where paper lanterns strung in a line
for buddha's birthday in the twilight lane
and piping frogs with their refrain
sang me home from
