STROMA - Connor Sinclair
Stroma is an island off the coast of Caithness in the North of Scotland. Its earliest known inhabitants spoke Old Norn and lived on the isle around a thousand years ago, as recorded as in The Orkneyinga Saga. In recent times, a community of over 300 people lived, worked, and died there. Today it lies abandoned.
The island attracts the occasional traveller who all journey to bask in its eerie stillness. It’s said to feel as if the inhabitants of the island were all at once disappeared; prayer books lay open in the church pulpit, a bottle of ink dries in the post-office window, family photographs line the croft walls. As if the islanders were vanished. An island of ruins.
Ownership of the isle has passed hands many times. Its owner in the 1950s attempted to offer Stroma as a prize on the American TV gameshow “Bid ’n’ Buy”. Seemingly the show’s producers settled on a car instead.
