Ghosts and Shadows was founded by Gabriella Lawrence, Paul Wisner, KSushi (not her real name) and Steve Reynolds at a Halloween party. Paul had been playing guitar and writing songs for the Boston pop band Miskatonic; a band that Gabriella had been a member of for a short time. KSushi and Steve Reynolds had played together in the original lineup of the punk band Cheater Pint.

In 2016 KSushi decided to leave. Next Ghosts and Shadows was reincarnated by drummer Dean Fisher.

The original vision for Ghosts and Shadows was based on the early Cure records Faith and Seventeen Seconds... except with female vocals. The songs would incorporate surrealist themes and lyrics with sparse orchestration and moderate tempos. That was how it started.
