make your hair curly
and there were futures prized and prizes earned
and skills to be learned

and as the walls get thicker
as the ladder's kicked away
as your cheque gets bigger
and there's a gap between the things you do
and what you say
i see you covet your position

if they clock onto you
don't let them in
lock the doors now
don't let them in

cos there a ready-made canon of struggle to claim
so you can sound more convincing on the gravy train
and i see that skill dear
i shake your hand
cos it's hard to be so cynical in such a blatant land
