The first of these waltzes came to me as I watched Aberdeen F.C. (my chosen football team) crash out of 2017’s Europa League qualifying rounds, losing to Apallon Limassol of Cyprus. After such disappointment, I couldn’t very well dedicate a tune to the Dons so paying tribute to our Cypriot conquerors seemed like the magnanimous thing to do.
For much of 2019, I was engaged in recording the soundtrack to a major ITV adaption of Jane Austen’s unfinished novel “Sanditon”. Refusing to be confined to off-screen work, some of the musicians enjoyed a cameo as minstrels for the ball, head-to-toe in full Regency-era garb. I had scarcely fastened my pantaloons when this tune came into my head.
