“Rococo Variations” is an abstract work based around a series of synthesized harmonic transitions. After completing “Dreaming of the Dawn”, I was interested in animating basic / base harmonic material and disguising repetition with structural change. “Rococo Variations” began with a very simple (and melancholic) 8-bar harmonic passage (of whole notes). Working with pitches and harmonies in this way proved extremely challenging as synthetic voices, once recorded, were resistant to modification. Quite clearly, if a series of manipulations were possible, variation form was going to be one way of maintaining some coherence at the mixing stage.

The discrete nature of the notes / chords also provided a number of challenges. In addition to recorded MIDI files of the harmonic transitions, sequences were translated to Max/MSP enabling synthetic glissandi between chords, flexible duration control and dynamic timbral control of synthesis using a graphics tablet.

But why rococo? One possible transformation of the initial pitched material involved manipulating its harmonic spectra (perhaps making it inharmonic or animating the internal characteristics of a sound by glissandi). The graphic detail of certain sonograms was very intriguing. However, it would be foolish to ‘decorate’ the entire piece with these manipulations, doubly so to let this dictate the structure of the piece. But the idea of ‘rococo’ was set, especially influencing spectral and spatial manipulations in panning, granulation across multiple channels and convolution of drones with highly decorative material.

“Rococo Variations” was realized in 2006 at the composer’s studio and premiered on February 3, 2006 during the “Soundings…” festival in Reid Concert Hall (Edinburgh, Scotland, UK).

«Rococo Variations» est une œuvre abstraite se fondant sur une série de transitions harmoniques synthétisées. Après avoir terminé «Dreaming of the Dawn», j’ai eu envie d’animer des matières harmoniques basiques et d’utiliser des changements structurels pour déguiser les répétitions. À l’origine, «Rococo Variations» n’était qu’un très simple passage harmonique (et mélancolique) de huit mesures de rondes. Travailler ainsi sur les hauteurs et les harmonies s’est révélé extrêmement difficile, puisque les voix synthétiques, une fois enregistrées, résistaient à toute modification. Très clairement, si une série de manipulations s’avérait possible, le maintien d’une certaine cohérence à l’étape du mixage s’obtiendrait par la variation.

La nature discrète des notes / accords posait, elle aussi, quelques défis. Outre des fichiers MIDI des transitions harmoniques, j’ai traduit des séquences vers Max/MSP pour pouvoir effectuer des glissandi synthétiques entre les accords et contrôler la durée et les dynamiques de la synthèse par le truchement d’une tablette graphique.

Alors, pourquoi rococo? L’une des transformations possibles de la matière tonale initiale impliquait de manipuler ses spectres harmoniques (peut-être la rendant inharmonique ou animant par des glissandi les caractéristiques internes d’un son). Certains sonogrammes offraient des détails très intrigants. Néanmoins, il serait ridicule d’utiliser ces manipulations pour «décorer» ainsi tout le morceau, encore plus de laisser ces manipulations dicter la structure de celui-ci. Pourtant, l’idée de rococo était en place, influençant particulièrement les manipulations spectrales et spatiales dans la spatialisation, la granulation à travers plusieurs canaux et la convolution de bourdons avec des matières très décoratives.
