Rhizomes by Stephan Dunkelman

Belgian composer Stephan Dunkelman (1956-2020) is inspired by “the spirit of the dance and the need for silence” for the seven acousmatic pieces included on “Rhizomes”, a collection spanning ten years (1991-2000). Studies on seemingly ill-matched sound universes in “Metharcana”, rotation of sound and silence in “Rituellipses”, search for the points of contact between the real and the unreal in “Dreamlike Shudder in an Airstream Part 1”… Dunkelman recombines sounds in a way which rewards listener involvement. An experience akin to a jigsaw puzzle with meanings. [dt]

About “Rhizomes”

My work unites living Time and Space.

On the one hand, it develops expressions of space for music. It then integrates them into already existing expressions of time or, better still, designs them during the very process of creation, as new expressions of time are revealed.

On the other hand, it modulates sound patterns (chosen for their morphological or imaginal qualities) by highlighting their roots in ways that energize them. Playing with the mental images that are suggested thus makes it possible to perceive the nature of the living phenomena that arise from the process.

The spirit of the dance and the need for silence are the emitters/transmitters that I have chosen to guide me.

During the composition phase, their presence assert themselves and then wane, leaving the spirit to guide the senses.

And so, between Heaven and Earth, listening is vertical.

Le compositeur belge Stephan Dunkelman (1956-2020) s’inspire de «l’esprit de la danse et la nécessité du silence» pour nous offrir «Rhizomes», collection de sept pièces acousmatiques s’étalant sur dix ans (1991-2000). Travail sur des univers sonores à priori mal assortis dans «Metharcana», ronde des sons et du silence dans «Rituellipses», recherche des points de tangente entre le réel et l’irréel dans «Dreamlike Shudder in an Airstream Part 1»… Dunkelman réorganise les sons d’une manière qui appelle à l’implication de l’auditeur. Une expérience comparable à un jeu de casse-tête avec le sens. [dt]

À propos de «Rhizomes¢

Mon travail consiste à solidariser Temps et Espace animés.

D’une part développer des expressions de l’espace pour le musical; les intégrer à celles, déjà existantes, du temps ou mieux, les dessiner en cours de réalisation lorsque se dévoilent de nouvelles expressions du temps.

D’autre part moduler des motifs sonores choisis pour leurs qualités morphologiques ou imagiques en s’éclairant de leur rhiza pour les dynamiser. Jouer avec les images mentales qu’elles suggèrent et percevoir ainsi la nature des phénomènes animés qui en découlent.

L’esprit de la danse et la nécessité du silence sont les émetteurs/transmetteurs que j’ai choisi pour m’orienter.

Leur présence s’impose et s’oublie en phase de composition pour laisser le spirituel guider les sens.

Pour qu’entre la Terre et le Ciel l’écoute soit verticale.
