Dream Lover by Eli Paperboy Reed
Most of the songs on “Dream Lover” are stripped down versions of songs from “99 Cent Dreams.” I originally went in to the studio with my longtime band members Mike Montgomery on bass, J.B. Flatt on Wurlitzer electric piano and Noah Rubin on percussion to recorded reference demos for the album, but when the gang from Yep Roc and I went back to listen after the fact, we felt they were good enough and different enough from the album versions to warrant an official release. The icing on the cake, though, is the song that gives this E.P. its name: our version of Mariah Carey’s “Dream Lover.” I’ve always loved the song and I had so much fun recording this Chicago Soul inspired rearrangement of it. All these songs were recorded live in the studio to 1/2’’ tape in glorious mono. Enjoy!
