THUNDER LIZARDS

We passed a bank of snow
A pile of bones
But then
A slit of a stream and the sound of the drum
Drew us within our animal skin
A strange becalm
Time leaves the record of how things fall

A flashing in and out among the trees
Where flowers drop and scatter seed
A dark kiss insisting on my bliss
Now I'm lifting on the wind
Even as the sky brings dawn
And all the thunder lizards are gone

We do judge the future by the past
And are wrong about the risks involved
And who or what will fall and when
Now adrift
What made them draw and lift
I blame the calm
And that insistent song
