eXoteric is a three part series of EPs featuring dub techno grooves laced together with static drone chords. While a similar technique was used with the recent Lurking Senses, an earlier Downscope release callled chœ actually had a similar approach back in June 2018 (links below). eXoteric focuses a bit more on minimalism, and low end groove. The drone chord stems from a Plaits module run through a Mankao Filter then fed through a Brainwaves pitch shifter followed by the ZVEX Lo-Fi Loop Junky effects pedal. The original generated chord becomes so manipulated and crushed that the noise artifacts from the signal path alone become a new instrument.
eX: III's warmer tones are rather reminiscent of the first track from the series, while eX: IV offers a unique environment with the droning chords featured in a tight stereo field and a bit dry from layered effects. This somewhat claustrophobic delivery enables the pops and clicks of a resonant filter to punctuate the fluttering, rhythmic stabs that try to break through the drone barrier. eX: V concludes this second instalment with a culmination of familiar elements in an upbeat fashion.
