There have not been many true innovators and inventors of the contemporary saxophone sound in free
jazz and free improvisation. Of course, The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost: John Coltrane, Pharaoh
Sanders and Albert Ayler revolutionized tenor, while Steve Lacy soprano. On the European scene Peter
Brötzmann and Evan Parker were undisputable Giants of the New Sound on tenor, soprano and more
exotic instruments, like tarogato. In recent decades, Europe is particularly fertile ground for new sound
inventors in free improvised music. And amoung them, the absolute outstanding sound innovator is Don
Malfon, a.k.a. Alfonso Muñoz, who specializes in baritone and alto.
The title is “Mutable” because the essence of the art of Don is mutating. He does not use electronic
transformations and sound deformations. No, Don uses various object to change and/or transform in a
very specific way his saxophone sound, and generate “fake sounds” as I call them, or “alternative” sounds
as Barry Guy calls them. The saxophone may sound in such instances as a string instrument, as
percussion, as live electronics, or as another, completely different wind instrument, like trumpet.
“Mutable” is a Masterpiece of contemporary saxophone.
