Review of Schmerzliche Leere, by Mão da Glória:
“Schmerzliche Leere” emerges as a mantle woven from threads of despair and transcendence, one that defies the stifling confines of conventional black metal. This split record, born from the creative synergy of Dissonanz and Gegenentwurf, channels an amorphous spirit that situates between the brooding quiet of ambient textures and the ferocious heartbeat of primal black metal.
Every passage dances on the edge of chaos and order, where the acoustic strains and synthesiser whispers dissolve into the raging surge of electric fervor. The album unfolds as a voyage across sonic landscapes: one moment inviting the listener into the haunting stillness of a shadowed folk narrative, the next unleashing the tempest of death metal and jazzlike syncopations. In doing so, it creates an experience both unpredictable and mesmerizing, in vivid interplay between sound and silence that speaks to the depths of human emotion.
The poetic essence of the lyrics, with their echoes of overwhelming sensation and the haunting void of numbness, imbues the record with a purely intimate energy. The anguished cries and contemplative murmurs echo through each note of the instruments into a whisper of existential truth, where the intensity of the performance is not merely an exhibition of technical mastery, but a dialogue between inner turmoil and fleeting beauty.
