First Run

Gone are the days of longing
When high hopes brought disaster
A delicate smile, a promising smile
Too many times I could have died waiting

I remember wild color
Pages of fire and pain
But those were dreams
Intangible schemes
That punished more than they pleased me

Friday, Saturday, Sunday's done
Tell you what happened then
Nothing Fun
Now I'm not overly particular
Let's just say that I have retired
After a first run my critics called uninspired

Trees and animals, two by two
It's not to die from but what to do
I know all misery is relative
Still it seems a high price to pay
Living with minimum emotion today
