The kaleidoscopic world of Austin Barnes expands with "Grindhouse GF," arguably his noisiest and most ambitious project to date. With this new release, the Glasgow-based musician takes his unhinged brand of noise pop even to places previously unexplored: bloated synths and corrupted kick drums unite in a wholly unconventional yet boundary-pushing mix. Whereas Barnes' previous releases have covered themes as diverse as global politics, religion and apocalyptic futures, Grindhosue GF introduces an intimately personal dimension for the first time. In his own words: "I was trying to make a punk album about the cost of living crisis then I got distracted by being horny." With candid yet self-aware lyricism, and track titles such as "What a stupid fucking loser" and "I might actually light myself on fire," Barnes' playful sardonicism mingles with stark explorations of personal desire.
