“The English” is Kowloon Cowboy’s first collection of singles, with “The
English” and “Kowloon Standby” making their exclusive debut.
Honed by a strong disciplined DIY ethic, Kowloon Cowboy’s songs are propelled by a sense of urgency. Angular guitars and ferocious drums underpin poppy choruses. Vocals and snares are saturated with overdrive. Each song is narrative driven with themes including post-colonisation, the American hegemony, and art history. They are about fictional characters at points of great emotional change, influenced by Mark Fisher's interpretation of Hauntology through the lens of a reimagined Hong Kong.
“Kowloon Standby” is about a liminal night misspent in Hong Kong in the 90’s. It was influenced by Wong Kar Wai’s Fallen Angels and the photographs of Greg Girard.
“The English” is about the 1997 British-Chinese Handover of Hong Kong and the end of an unequal relationship.
