Jimmy (3:51) - Mid tempo, Merle Travis inflected, very tuneful.
This is my hat tip to Merle Travis and Mississippi John Hurt. Both men had powerful picking styles featuring prominent thumbs, primarily responsible for the solid downbeat bass notes heard from their guitars. Their playing is also melodically articulate. The title Jimmy is for Jimmy Rogers, as this tune came about whilst trying to make my guitar yodel. I failed at the yodeling.
Nashville based Colin O'Brien is a master of the acoustic guitar. His compositions harken to Leo Kottke, whilst his dancing feet groove in the wake of the late John Hartford, who O'Brien also sites as a primary songwriting inspiration.
“Thirteen is a mesmerizing journey that evokes the virtuosity and fluid ambience of John Fahey and Leo Kottke. ” Craig Havighurst WMOT Nashville
