Mistune by Chris Prosser

The tunings for both instruments explore the theme ‘As close as makes a difference’. Tunings are not far in distance from standard pitch, nor from each other. Yet, with nine strings available, the combinations provide wide scope for harmonic and emotional interplay. The music is a mixture of prepared score and improvisation.

Strad - church bells transposed from Cremona to Rongotai
Resolve - tension and resolve continually built in
Beam - sharpening of top violin strings brings lift
Question - Robbie thought of this name, so why not
Knock - who is in the violin
Wax - brings it on
Minor - based on a triad
Fleck - a short wave
Thrum - so relaxed it barely comes into being
Quakey - a name that belies neutral temperament
Ebb - smell of the sea
Strange - fog and 98 per cent humidity
Foam - splashy
Standard - ‘Strad’ on standard violin tuning; tanpura is Pa sa sa sa Sa
Offset - doesn’t want to fit in
