sarah is the only picture in the room
drip drop drip drop
on the tin roof
she’s framed in a hole
revealing nothing
but the wilderness below
and she’s closer to God than me
at least that’s what it seems like
maybe she’s only closer to the sky

sarah steps outside for a smoke
breathes the air in
and breathes it out
needles are poking holes
letting the life out
of her thankless bones
it’s like she’s never been
to see a sunrise
above the mist of
the new york skyline
but when she opens up the door
she never throws a word forward

she never liked
the way her name
fell from her tongue
she never liked
the way the light
made her feel better

sarah took her life tonight
she stood above the lights
closed her eyes
and scratched the fight
she swore on a sunday morning
she would never talk to God
well she did that night
she just wanted to be his angel
she just wanted to see what it was like
and now the sirens whine
and the crowds line
and holy conversations rise
to sarah
