Greed by Celtic Rumours
Formed in 1987 by Kevin van Staden on vocals and Russell Warne on keyboards under the name Empire Rage - fellow Westville Boys High guitarist Gary Turner was soon added, with Ross Campbell and Richard Du Buisson from Kloof High on drums and bass respectively. Rehearsals started off in Russell's folk's garage but soon moved to the Presbyterian church in Pinetown.
Russell left and was replaced by Sean Schulze fairly early on. Roger Young, Kevin's best friend came up with the name Celtic Rumours - which was inspired by The Cure's album Japanese Whispers. Rich left the band to join Underground Press (long time rival band in the local Durban scene) and Lars Lofstrand joined. He was from Pinetown Boys High and had a car!
The band cut a demo at C&G studios, Westville for R300 and sent it on to Barney Simon at Radio 5. The two songs on this fan page were from that demo and both charted on Barney's alternative charts. The band was invited to record a track for a compilation LP Barney was putting together. Slow Rain was recorded at Downtown studios JHB for The Flying Circus LP ('88) and became the band's first hit song.
Soon after that Ross left the band and Geoff Wybrow joined on drums. The band recorded and released their first LP called This Day and started touring with the likes of the Psycho Reptiles and Cinema throughout '89. Wishing I was Lonely was the single from the band's second album Greed, but by this time the strain of touring had all but put an end to the band's bright future.
Kevin later moved to JHB and formed a band called Communique who was recording and performing when a tragic car crash claimed his life and that of his sister and girlfriend.

Despite topping the South African charts and touring incessantly, this Durban based band disintegrated in the early '90s after releasing only two albums.
Sadly, whilst working on his debut solo album, vocalist Kevin van Staden was killed in a car accident in December 1994.
