I think gardener is my favorite song on 5G. From the beginning to end of its production it seemed to have an energy of its own. This carried it forward with ease from demo phase to the blended tracks you hear now. It just flowed.

Like One of a Kind, it was inspired by my wife and her effect on my life. If you’ve ever enjoyed the pleasure of walking down a path or looking out a window and seeing the bright colors of newly planted flowers, the first verse may remind you of such a moment. It was that very experience that inspired the first line, “She is a gardener, brightening our home, bringing all this color to the darkness I have known.” From there, the song’s lyrics venture steadily into the land of metaphor, finally ending with an ode to the greatest gardener of all.

I spent many hours honing the chorus lyrics. In this, their final form, I think they sum up my deepest beliefs about loving relationships. I do think of every lifetime as a garden, its dearest features created from seeds within our hearts. And I certainly do believe that when a person finds their gardener-- that right fit of caring, wisdom, and passion—their life becomes transformed into a work of art. Just after my 50th birthday, I found my gardener. Her name is Ute.
