I’m known as a poet in some circles, that’s what he said
And the crowd all laughed at the joke while he strummed his guitar instead
Late night gig, funky little bar, Smith’s Alternative
Scruffy singer in a chequered suit sharing what he had to give
His lips still wet from a Coopers green as he seduced the mike
I guess I was in one of those circles, because I was listening to a poet alright

And Dylan got the Nobel Prize just a month before
That made me feel good inside
And so did watching this poet on a tiny stage floor

He’s one of our dinosaurs with an all too familiar face
He’s got a heavy heart and he’s left it all over the place
He’s you and he’s I, but please don’t ask him to smile
Just lean back in a Berlin chair and soak it all up for a while
He caressed those strings like he was taking a lover to bed
And hours, daily, I remember everything that he said
