Unbroken by Bronwyn Eather and Paul Vassallo as Aether + Vassallo

The album title 'Unbroken' emerged from the story of Eliza Swift in the novel ‘I am magpie, written by Bronwyn Eather at the end of 2020.

In the story Eliza is broken by circumstances and mired in grief and despair, yet when healed she finds her true purpose and becomes stronger than ever before.
This brings to mind the ancient Japanese ceramic art of kintsugi, where an artisan mends what is broken with resin and veins of pure gold to make it stronger and more beautiful than the original. This eventually became the inspiration for the cover art, so beautifully designed by our friend, Mark Fairhurst.
The music for 'Unbroken' began as a suite ‘Into the Aether’ composed on piano earlier in 2020. This formed a foundation for the soundscapes of ‘I am magpie’ and then with elemental changes and additional atmospherics became accompaniment for the tracks in 'Unbroken', reinforced by Vassallo’s slide guitar and slide-bow and Eather’s keyboards. The lyrics came partly from the novel but also from concurrent poems and songs written around that time.

Born in Tasmania, Bronwyn Eather came to Sydney to study acting, following almost a decade of pioneering work as a field linguist in Arnhem Land, in the remote north of Australia.
Her fifth recording 'Swaggerland' is due for release mid 2025. This follows 'Unbroken' 2024 with Paul Vassallo, 'Brave Old World' 2020, 'Against the Tide' 2017 and her debut EP 'On the Bones of Love' 2015.
