Auto Fictions by Bridge Dog
False starts and abrupt tonal swerves abound over the nine tracks that make up Auto Fictions, the debut album from Sydney’s Bridge Dog. Alternately introspective and immediate, thoughtful and jagged, the five-piece has produced a melodically rich, lyrically dense statement of purpose.
The title “Auto Fictions” began life as an in-joke about the frequency with which songwriters Grace Ha and Brian Park relied on motifs of driving, cars, and roads, but quickly came to take on greater meaning. Themes of memory, time, and fractured relationships run throughout, a vividly drawn cast of characters blurring autobiographical elements with fiction in ways both poignant and playful.
Lovingly DIY-ed in basements and other makeshift recording spaces, Auto Fictions draws from the band’s diverse roots in unexpected ways. Lead single “Counterweight” is noise pop shaped in the afterglow of a Twin Peaks marathon; “New View” wears its shambolic, Television Personalities-esque heart on its sleeve; but Bridge Dog’s ability to reconfigure their influences into a sound distinctly their own is perhaps most evident on “Standard Issue”. Drummer Eduardo Guerra adds a Bossa Nova-style beat from his native Brazil to the swirling introduction, before the track veers into the unlikely Korean folk ballad structure in which it ultimately finds catharsis.
