Gutter Lanterns from Clocklit Curfew by Brassline

Lyrics

Lantern wick stutters above oil-black run-off
Trumpet bleeds a five-step question, drums postpone reply

I trade cigar smoke signals with old crew shapeshifted by guilt
Their faces blur behind chainlink fog
Each owed favor drips down the curb like thawed varnish
Brushed snares skip, my pocket watch refuses straight counts
If their silence rolls snake-eyes, I leave with hollow pockets
Baritone horn growls, daring me to stay

Lantern number three blinks twice. I know that's Kora's bargain signal.
Two blinks: pay in memories, leave with marrow.
No blink: run.

Soot-coated bricks breathe out stories I almost wrote
Trumpet replies with a serrated upper register
I step between pockets of lampflare, wagering breath on each stride
Bass doubles rib-drums, yet refuses perfect intervals
If trust snaps here, Tantalus laughs behind the barrel
Horn line ascends, then mimics my hesitation

Hear that scrape? that's Cal's ring scraping the valve.
Means disagreement.
Keep palms open but knuckles ready.

Lantern number seven spits sparks, painting debts across wet stone
All at once, the trumpet screams, baritone swallows it whole
I issue the wager: 'one more skipped rib-thump, and the pact dissolves'
Tambourine shivers like bad news

Last ember dies. Choose: settle, or sleep with unpaid names.

Bass slumps into gutter runoff swirl
Trumpet exhales a single unison with the lamp's final breath
