Bittersweet by Bonniesongs

The concept of the song for me is to not take life or myself too seriously and remember to stay fun and joyful, even in weird times. I have a bit of a Halloween theme with my new record, and this song is no exception… I imagined brewing a magic potion that put you under a spell to have fun. I wrote this song when my kiwi partner and I ended up in New Zealand during the COVID-19 pandemic. After the initial wave of lockdowns was over in NZ, we found ourselves at a local homebrew club where I tried an unreal Belgian cherry sour which brought me joy at a strange time! I recorded it back in Sydney with long-term collaborator David Trumpmanis between his studio in St Peters and Golden Retriever Studios.

My partner and band member Thomas Botting was working as a brewer over the last few years, during which time he has introduced me to many yummy styles! It made sense to collaborate with friends at Village Days to make a cherry sour. When I approached head brewer Alex, he was just about to make a fruited sour ale and was keen for my suggestion of cherries. It felt like the stars aligned and we began brewing our witchy delicious potion!
