Heat Spells by Bitter Fictions

Heat Spells was recorded at home over a couple of pleasant days in the summer haze of July 2018. I'm not a big summer person but our apartment had a small balcony shaded by large trees, a cool spot to sit and read next to the record player. A few blocks away there's a bench on top of a hill overlooking the city. I would occasionally run into friends walking and/or sneaking off to get high away from their kids there. It was nice + relatively idyllic in hindsight.

I recall trying to get "inside" the sounds here, palpate the contours and densities, draw out the lights & shadows. A tactile approach w electric brush rattling, cranked headphones, plastic/wood vs metal/skin, time is no matter / shots at infinity drive - play til the tape's done + pop in the next one.

"Protracted" is deep in the heat, anxious swelter tearing/kicking/rubbing its fingers in the dirt, constant urging "keep going get through" til crops grow / clouds part / and the sun sets on the flickering edges of "Words", basking in a warm glow.

"Words" has been a live staple for a few years and this was the genesis of it. It is usually played on tabletop for better resonance, or on top of an amp if yr nasty.

Download includes a fourth track "the stumbling blocks have all been thrown", a warm up recorded a day before the rest. Could never decide where/whether it fit and still can't, apparently.
