Aterere by Francis Njoroge, Papi Singh

Aterere (meaning "listen" in Gikuyu) is a red hot funky Afropop/Punjabi crossover that celebrates the 2 iconic urban cultures of Nairobi City.

The album represents a significant moment in music history when computers first began to take the center stage in music production in the city. In this case Njoroge teamed up with Ahmed Juma (Mombasa Roots band) of SYNC Sounds Studios in Nairobi. Having already produced several funky singles (High on You etc..) in London (Keyboard Studios) to his credit, Njoroge brought his experience in the UK studios back home and arranged this one-of-kind most unique crossover EP blending the Punjabi music of the Indian sub-continent and Kenyan funk and Afropop together.

Njoroge spared no expense and hired a crack team of engineers and artists with the help of Papi Singh who delivers an absolutely enchanting golden vocal performance. The EP gives life to the real blending of these 2 cultures particularly in the Urban context. The "Kalasingha" Punjabis who emigrated to Kenya at the turn of the century to help build the colonial project of the railroad and Nairobi and the indigenous Gikuyu people who populated it.
