Limbo by Ryan Benis

LIMBO, the debut album by Ryan Benis, is both about ends and beginnings. The final piece in the all encompassing project THE SUBURBIA TRILOGY (which include the EP GOOF, mixed by Vernie In Hell, ROLLERCOASTER, produced and mixed by Broken English) the now full LP LIMBO, produced by Elitimesfour and mixed by Isabella James, acts as the first feature length project from Ryan Pearce’s experimental hip hop project Ryan Benis, showing his genre-blending journey of self destruction, self analysis and self acceptance after being forced to confront traumatic events in his personal life during COVID in 2020 and new trauma pushing him to finally breaking free of the cycle of self abuse into taking accountability for his and others actions in 2023.

Tying loosely into the story being told during GOOF and ROLLERCOASTER, the persona created by Ryan Benis has found himself in an extremely vulnerable place; lost in a world he doesn’t know after leaving his home on Goof, having a mental breakdown and destroying his sense of self as well as his hometown on Rollercoaster and looking for earnest help after realizing his trauma around masculinity and ego, only to find cold shoulders that Ryan can’t help but agree with, sending him into further isolation.

LIMBO is a more mature, reflective and healing piece of Experimental Hip Hop, incorporating elements of Noise Rock, Ambient, Post-Rock, Hardcore and even Pop music to the already hectic blend of Industrial Hip Hop Benis creates. Whereas GOOF lyrically was an attempt to dismantle the struggles of the ‘mask’ of male masculinity and ROLLERCOASTER was experiencing manic depressive chaos, LIMBO is much more about honesty and healing without sacrificing grit and energy. If ROLLERCOASTER is an explosion, LIMBO is the aftermath, creating a narrative conclusion to THE SUBURBIA TRILOGY while expanding upon the Ryan Benis sound and ideology for the future.
