On 3rd August 2022, almost a year since the previous eruption ceased in the Reykjanes Peninsula in Southern Iceland, a new volcano emerged in the nearby valley of Meradalir.
Ben Frost and Francesco Fabris arrived at the eruption site within hours, documenting this much more powerful and significantly larger volcano throughout the night, which formed a string of explosive fissures stretching over 250m across the valley floor.
The material collected resulted in an entirely new world of sound which differed greatly from the recordings depicted on Vakning.
This new two-track EP consists of a first piece constructed of unaltered field recordings from Meradalir, and a second movement which evokes transformation, obliteration and rebirth through creative processing of the original material.
The music of Ben Frost is about contrast; influenced as much by Classical Minimalism as by Punk Rock and Metal, Frost's throbbing guitar-based textures emerge from nothing and slowly coalesce into huge, forbidding forms that often eschew conventional structures in favor of the inevitable unfoldings of vast mechanical systems.
