Ongaku by Beaunoise

in august 2023, i spent several weeks traveling in Japan. i brought a few small synthesizers & sound manipulating devices with me in a backpack and recorded things i heard and felt along the way. 

returning home to California, i revisited these musical sketches and field recordings and discovered they offered a record of experience that photographs and words failed to convey.

for many years I’ve been fascinated by Chris Marker's "Sans Soleil”, which connects Japan and San Francisco ( among other places ) through meditations on memory, travel, time, and the haze of experience. inspired in part by Marker's film, "Ongaku" is an imagined travelogue through place and memory.
