Since last year, the Viennese beach grungers BAITS have been warming up the scene with burning singles (e.g. in the video of What’s On Your Mind they set fire to a printer in a black magic ritual) and entertaining us with memes, and now finallly their long-awaited debut album Never Enough will be released on Numavi Records on January 29, 2021.
Hookline after hookline - molded into shape by drummer and producer Fazo, together with LW Sonics studio owner Lukas Wiltschko - give you a good beating over the ears, often in high tempo.
The band’s rough edges and strengths are highlighted: Sonja Maier's furious, melancholic voice and Christopher Herndler's wild (or delicately playful) guitar solos harmonize perfectly with dynamic drums and the punchy, sometimes weird bass runs of ex-bassist Maurizio Massaro (now Julian Werl of Land of Ooo) - very much in the style of the Pixies, Breeders and a touch of Jay Reatard. Not only do they manage to capture the sweaty, raw, energy of many 90’s indie bands, but they also dare going out on a limb to capture the pop, fuzz pop as they call it. The result is a pop album with as much snot and dirt as possible.
Lyrically, it very contemporarily deals with our fears, especially of not being enough or not getting enough, to which the album title refers. The artwork, made by Fazo, in the form of a burger symbolically shows what an album production is made of: love, tears, pain and joy - the ingredients of what music and life can serve you.
Live, the band is a force of nature, not to be missed on the Austrian tour planned for spring 2021.
