Babe Lewis’s Sunspot strikes like lightning: at random, with power and beauty. A solo project from Joseph Harder, it mixes Jeff Buckley and Jawbreaker, sprinkles in Tame Impala, flirts with “dream-pop” – it is like raising a child exclusively on the Elephant 6 and Nevermind, and then, for their 16th birthday, a cousin gives them a mix-tape with some Badly Drawn Boy, Caribou, Dungen, a hand-me-down acoustic guitar and some shrooms. Sunspot goes in so many directions without feeling like it has taken any detours or digressions – cohesive in its ambition, fidelity, and emotional resonance, it takes a lot of swings and makes a ton of contact.
