Waypoints (EP) by Avaendil

Waypoints began in April 2020 with the piano improvisation that eventually became "Meditation". My initial idea was to create a few tracks for an EP in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the myriad unknowns we all faced. However, as the project progressed the concept evolved to have a more proactive, rather than reactive, point of view.

The titles of the five tracks depict a series of stages, or waypoints, in the execution of any substantial undertaking: Persuasion, Exploration, Achievement, Meditation, and Awakening.

Musically, each of the tracks uses a different diatonic mode and each has a different tonic note. Each track also employs a different odd and asymetrical meter from the others, from 5/8 to 13/8.

The overall tone aims to be introspective and optimistic as we navigate the uncharted territory in which we find ourselves.

Avaendil is the ambient music project of composer James Worlton. He has written and arranged music for chamber ensembles, choirs, orchestras, electroacoustic works, and music for film. Current musical interests include algorithmic composition, improvisation, drones, and progressive rock.
