Daniel Gerhard Holc with Tatsuro Murakami – Patterns
At first glance, Daniel Gerhard Holc and Tatsuro Murakami seem like unlikely collaborators—divided by continents, generations, and contrasting musical upbringings. But a chance meeting at a dinner hosted by the Towada Art Center in Japan set the stage for a collaboration rooted in curiosity, mutual respect, and a shared love for experimental sound.
Patterns is the result: a guitar-only album that transcends genre through inventive reimagining. Both artists contribute guitar recordings—ranging from melodic phrasings to abstract textures—which were then looped, rearranged, and remixed by Daniel into intricate sonic tapestries. The result is a beautifully layered and atmospheric exploration of guitar music, pushing the instrument beyond its traditional role.
Daniel’s background in dub-techno and ambient production lends the album its rhythmic structure and hypnotic flow, while Tatsuro brings a richly melodic sensibility inspired by 70s prog rock, jazz, and Brazilian guitar traditions. The guitars whisper, drone, shimmer, and sometimes glitch—each track unfolding like a living, breathing composition shaped by both spontaneity and structure.
Patterns is less a collection of songs and more a meditative journey through sound—a study in contrast and cohesion, where the guitar is both the source and the canvas.
