Well a long time ago I rode several miles
To the house of a girl who lived down a track
She was nowhere around so I lingered awhile
Put a letter through her door and I never went back

Then I was standing in a beer tent in a big country crowd
And she danced right across me so long and so tall
She didn’t recognise me and of that there’s no doubt

I started writing songs and poems and such
And there was a girl I wrote some of them for
Well I was seventeen and I hadn’t learned much
‘Cause most poems and songs are wasted after all

I went to her house in an unfamiliar town
And we talked about music and the words I’d sent
Well the last time I saw it that house had come down
And in fifteen quick years I never seen her again

And there’s not very much more I can say
Somewhere in that time I realised what I’d found
And got hit by a train that was running away

You could say I’m a sucker for sentimental stuff
And dwelling on things better left in the past
