The Room by Adam Finchler

Adam Finchler's latest album, 'The Room,' combines sour kindness with sage irony where each low thing foretells a mythologically high domain: perception itself can be massaged at a bargain, meatloaves comprise visions of freefall in lower Manhattan, and the titular mystery of a Brooklyn room reveals our transcendental homelessness in nature, where the last gentrifier to arrive in Bushwick will be the ocean itself. Grave and lush instrumentation work Finchler’s wry humor into a vibe of simultaneous cosmic gratitude and cosmic loss, as the bright and jaunty “Melinda Wagner” and her indelible name bespeak a “tiny world of pain,” and a lounge lizard’s New York accent peeks out only in the doomed promise to love Toronto. These are songs for driving at a snail’s pace on the BQE in July, songs of ambiguous humor and haunting, full-heartedness and worry, of local apocalypse and pending redemption.
