This is one of the last recordings by my very first Harsh Noise project Knife City that I started when I was 18 years old living in Southern California. I had heard a bit of noise at that point, like Kites and Prurient (being a big fan of Load Records throughout High School) and I knew about Merzbow, Masonna and John Wiese...but it wasn't until I was exposed to Troniks and affiliated artists from the area like Ex-Jesus, Impregnable, Privy Seals and Pedestrian Deposit...that's what really had a big impact on me initially. Seeing them perform and buying the tapes they were putting out on their own labels...at the time this was so life affirming. I wanted to be in a punk or metal band for so long, but noise found me and released me from that longing. I became obsessed. This was the main catalyst for starting AAD and even though I had no idea what I was doing it was a lot of fun and gave me a creative outlet I so needed at the time. There was no social media and I didn't have paypal, but I was mostly advertising my releases on the Troniks forum and trading with people or receiving well-concealed cash in a birthday card. Eventually other labels started asking me to do releases and I was even able to take Knife City on the road for an East Coast tour with my pals Steev (Roxanne Jean Polise/Warmth) and Khris & Matt (Villa Valley) who now operate Nostilevo. I was a pretty crusty kid at the time, pretty sure I wore the same outfit the entire tour and maybe showered once. All I brought with me was a few DIY tapes, a Boss DS-1 and a contact mic. "Confinement" was released in an edition of 25 as a business card shaped CDr (some were packaged inside empty cigarette boxes). A friend of mine scored a copy of this recently and sent me the track (thanks James!).
